So why is it that Gulf News disables this feature for some articles and allows for others? What are the criteria? Who decides this?

Here are a couple of examples of articles that can easily attract community participation:

1. Interview with Vinay Katiyar on the Babri Masjid case. Here I wanted to post a comment: Wake up Vinay, Samarkand is not in Afghanistan but Uzbekistan!

That’s the message I got when I attempted to register myself to post a comment that I had prepared for one of the stories – after spending almost half an hour writing it in a Word processor!! Is it not common sense that if a new design is in the works, why not simply disable the “Please log in to post a comment” label altogether to avoid something this?

TheNational seriously needs a design overhaul anyway considering they lack the social media elements. And a tip – instead of implementing a user registration system simply utilize APIs to authenticate users who already have accounts with various social media sites such as Google/ Facebook/ Twitter, etc – it will encourage more people to comment.
